In a city that supposedly never sleeps, providing a blissful night’s slumber is The Benjamin’s main mission. Surrounded by the bustle of Midtown (Rockefeller Center, Grand Central and Central Park are all within a 10-minute walk), the AAA 4-Diamond hotel has gone to great lengths to create a sleep-inducing environment.
Expect soundproof windows, blackout shades, six pillow options and plush 500-thread-count sheets in all rooms. If that wasn’t enough, those suffering from travel insomnia can book a complimentary consultation with the in-house sleep expert for advice on overcoming jet lag. There is also a special nap turndown service for travelers checking in after a red eye, white-noise machines and a healthy in-room bedtime snack menu.
The Benjamin is housed in a 1927 art deco gem with a marble lobby, where complimentary coffee and tea is served throughout the day. Upstairs, all of the guest rooms and suites were renovated in 2013 and come with a kitchenette and posh décor. There are plenty of one-bedroom suites that are great for families and include a separate living room with a queen sleeper sofa. Some even have private furnished terraces, a rarity in Manhattan.
Besides the promise of a good night’s sleep, the hotel’s James Beard Award-winning National Bar & Dining Rooms pulls in the crowds. Created by celebrity Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian to be a “grand New York café,” the restaurant serves bistro-style cuisine such as steak frites and oysters on the half shell, stiff cocktails and a hearty weekend brunch. Dinner is accompanied by the sound of live jazz every Sunday from 6-10 p.m.
Before heading out on the town, stop by the hotel’s Federico Hair Salon & Spa for a killer blowout from Federico Calce, runway stylist to the models of Fendi, Valentino and Armani. The hotel also has a couple of treatment rooms for massages and a small gym.
