Tucked discretely off the chicest stretch of Madison Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side, The Surrey has served as a celebrity hideaway for nearly a century (JFK and Bette Davis are among many notable past guests). It's in an ideal spot for those who came to the Big Apple to shop -- labels like Christian Louboutin, Carolina Herrera and Missoni are literally around the corner. Just two blocks away are The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim, the Whitney and the Neue Galerie, and there are free Bobbin Bikes for guests to explore the city.

Listed as a New York Magazine Critics' Pick and securing places on the Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure top hotels lists in 2013, The Surrey has a refined style and a killer art collection -- characteristic of the posh townhouses that dominate this upscale pocket of Manhattan. Its location one block from Central Park is a key selling point, but the hotel also has its own plot of greenery -- a 2,200-square-foot private rooftop garden and bar that is accessible only to guests and members of its exclusive Patrons Club (open May-October).

Also on the premises is the Michelin-starred Café Boulud, run by celeb French chef Daniel Boulud. Reservations are recommended, or meals can be ordered via room service. The heavenly Cornelia Spa is also worth a visit, where guests can sip tea with artisan honey in a dreamy lounge, before slipping into one of the five treatment rooms for further pampering.

Guest rooms, which the hotel calls 'salons', have a sophisticated uptown décor with fine linens, a Duxiana bed, custom furniture and an all-marble bathroom. Select rooms come with a fireplace, terrace or soaking tub. The suites all have a separate bedroom and living room, and some include a kitchen and dining area.

From the press:
  • "The Surrey emerged from a $60 million makeover in November 2009... While the exterior of the 17-floor property remains unchanged, the six-foot-high Chuck Close tapestry in the lobby of a wild-eyed Kate Moss is the first tip-off that things here are decidedly not Upper East Side business-as-usual" -- New York Magazine
  • "The Surrey has all the makings of one of Manhattan’s fine hotels and gets a boost because of its attractive location" -- New York Times
