With a central location and a 19th-century Italianate façade, the O'Callaghan Davenport Hotel makes a strong first impression. This grand property was formerly a prayer hall -- now it's a 4-star hotel with 103 rooms and 12 suites. The hotel is just around the corner from Merrion Square -- "arguably the most elegant of Dublin's Georgian squares" (Lonely Planet), where famous past residents include Oscar Wilde and WB Yeats.
The location is ideal for sightseeing -- the hotel is within 10 minutes' walk of Trinity College, where you can visit the Book of Kells (a 9th-century illuminated manuscript), and the capital's main museums (including the National Museum of Ireland's Natural History and Archaeology branches and the National Gallery). St Stephen's Green, Grafton Street and Dublin Castle are all within 20 minutes' walk. Pearse train station is a 5-minute walk away. From here, you can take the DART to Howth in 30 minutes. This quaint seaside town has "steep streets" and a "pretty working harbour" (The Daily Telegraph), and is popular for walks along the cliffs and its seafood dining.
The hotel's Lanyon's Restaurant serves a full Irish breakfast from 7am (7:30am on weekends). The dinner menu is traditional, and offers classic dishes such as slow-cooked Irish stew, and sweet-cured bacon chop with mustard mash and buttered cabbage, as well as 28-day aged rib-eye steak. The wood-panelled President's Bar offers lighter bites such as steak sandwiches and seafood chowder. There is also a small 24-hour gym.
Double Rooms have a classic finish, and Wi-Fi is available for an extra charge. Rooms on the south side of the building have views of the city or Merrion Square.
