"Belfast has a pace and bustle you'll find nowhere else in Northern Ireland", says Rough Guides.

After the ceasefire in 1994, a revitalisation programme helped Belfast get back on its feet. Along with new shopping centres, bars and restaurants came a host of new and revamped hotels, including the Malmaison Belfast, the only Irish outpost of the British chain.

Kylie Minogue and Westlife are among those who have stayed at this 19th-century former seed warehouse. Recommended by Condé Nast Traveller, this ornate property is "decorated in familiar Malmaisonesque decadent Gothic style: think black, moody greys and aubergine".

"Crushed red velvet on the beds and gold velvet on the chairs gives a Moulin Rouge chic" to the rooms, says The Guardian. Bedrooms are decorated in grey and brown, and have free Wi-Fi.

The Brasserie uses locally sourced ingredients to create dishes such as its signature Mal burger, smoked haddock fish cake and moules frites. Wash it all down with cocktails like Malmaison Fizz or Bad Boy, Good Girl served both in the restaurant and in MALBAR.

Within 10 minutes' walk of the hotel is the Cathedral Quarter, a lively area full of bars and restaurants; Waterfront Hall, a conference and entertainment centre; and St George's Market, one of Belfast's oldest attractions, dating back to the late 1800s, and a place where local producers sell a variety of fresh produce and other goods.
