Le Méridien Philadelphia is set in a rather grand former YMCA building in the Center City. Its location, right next to City Hall and only four blocks from the Pennsylvania Convention Center, is ideal for business travelers. It is also well situated for sightseeing -- a five-minute drive from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and an easy walk to the restaurants and bars in Rittenhouse Square.
The hotel retains many of its original features, such as oak paneling and stone fireplaces, but the lobby has the feel of an upscale apartment, with low sofas, tufted rugs and highbrow coffee-table literature.
The center piece is a 75-foot-high sunny atrium where you’ll find enormous couches and a business center. It’s a lively hub during the day as the Wi-Fi here is free (in-room charges apply).
Amuse, the hotel’s brasserie, serves classic French fare, such as lobster bouillabaisse and pot au feu, and is a vision in chrome and white. The adjoining bar is just as gorgeous, with paneled walls and an illuminated counter.
There’s also a small but adequate fitness room (open 24 hours a day), and jogging strollers are available on request for moms and dads who prefer to exercise outdoors. Head up to Fairmont Parkway for a pleasant run along the 10-mile Schuylkill River Trail.
The sleek rooms are decked out in white and slate gray also have a funky side, with velvet curtains and 1950s-style armchairs. Bathrooms have a walk-in shower or shower over the tub, marble counter tops and retro tiling. Some rooms overlook the central atrium, so request a street-facing room for more privacy.
