Overlooking the Sea of Cortez, Hacienda Encantada Resort & Spa is a quiet all-suite resort with local flavor. Built into the side of the jagged cliffs just a 10-minute walk north of the city center (out of earshot of the noisy party beaches), it’s structured to look like a Mexican village, with terracotta walls and tiled roofs. The resort itself is quite small, but the steep incline can make it tricky for the less mobile. Golf carts are on hand though, and there are regular shuttles (every two hours, 8am-8pm) to the marina (fees may apply).
You won't find a party crowd here. Instead the resort’s laid-back atmosphere attracts a mix of families and couples of all ages. There’s a free kids club, a large playground, jetting fountains and a shallow pool for children. While the little ones are busy playing, moms and dads can relax in the pool and grab a cocktail at the swim-up bar. The rocky beach is beautiful, but if you want to swim, stick to the pool -- the coastline is stony here and the powerful current makes it dangerous.
On site, the fancy La Trajinera serves dinner only, and the relaxed family-friendly Las Marias is open for buffet breakfasts. The best views can be found at the casual pool-side restaurants, which serve local dishes such as fish tacos and nachos. The all-inclusive package includes food and drinks as well as Spanish, cooking and cocktail-making classes, water aerobics and horseback riding. There’s also a spa with the traditional Temazcal (steam therapy) and a small gym.
The suites are spacious, with a full kitchen including a stovetop, microwave, fridge and crockery, and a dining room. There’s an on-site mini market for provisions. Stained-glass windows can be opened out to the sleeping space from the bathroom, so you can watch TV from the tub. All suites have are large private balconies, furnished with cushioned loungers.
