Named after Penn State University's mascot, the Nittany Lion Inn is a cozy hotel with a quaint atmosphere that belies its many conveniences and considerable size. It’s been a campus institution since it opened in 1931 and is still very traditional, with a white-washed façade with colonial-style shutters, a peaceful courtyard and a grand columned entrance.
The charming rooms and free services, including Wi-Fi access, parking and local shuttle transfers, make this one of America’s Top College Hotels, as chosen by Travel + Leisure in 2012. It is set within the western borders of Penn State campus, a 10-minute drive from I99 and 20 minutes from I80. The free shuttle service runs to local destinations (6 a.m. - 11 p.m.), including Penn State golf courses, Nittany Mall, Bryce Jordan Center and University Park Airport. On football weekends, there are also continuous shuttle services to and from Beaver Stadium (it’s advisable to book your spot in advance).
The hotel has a fully equipped fitness center on site, and guests can also use the indoor lap pool and whirlpool at The Penn Stater sister hotel, just off campus. For cultural excursions, you don’t have to look far: Six museums are on campus, including the free Palmer Museum of Art (Tuesday-Sunday), and don’t miss the Nittany Lion Shrine.
Expect polished wood furniture, elegant drapes and floral bedspreads in the traditional rooms. The best have sophisticated four-poster beds styled in the university’s colors of blue and white. Rooms have refridgerators and microwaves, but there are also two restaurants on site. Tuck in to classic American dishes, fine dining buffet brunches or seafood dinners at The Dining Room. Its selection of more than 5,000 bottles of wine is highly rated by Wine Spectator. Alternatively, stop by for burgers, burritos or a late-night meal at Whiskers, the hotel’s more casual pub.
