Eleven miles from Bath in the rolling Somerset countryside, Ston Easton Park is "one of the West Country’s most romantic estates", says Condé Nast Traveller. The property is set on 36 acres of grounds, with a gurgling river and views of the Mendip Hills.
The walled Victorian gardens provide organic fruit and vegetables, herbs and edible flowers to the hotel's award-winning Sorrel Restaurant -- an impressive 80% of the restaurant's fresh produce comes from here.
The elegant restaurant holds two AA Rosettes for its "carefully worked-out menus" and the "intense flavours and pin-sharp presentations" (The AA Restaurant Guide). Try the quail galantine with foie gras mousse and beetroot purée, the loin of local Mendip venison with hazelnuts and celeriac, and the dark chocolate torte and blood orange sorbet. But leave room for the excellent selection of local favourites on the cheese cart.
The rooms, described as "wonderful" by Condé Nast Traveller, combine English-country-house gentility and antique furniture, with comfortable beds and tasteful décor. Complimentary Wi-Fi and DVD players are standard, as are courtyard, village or countryside views. The State Rooms are the largest, with high ceilings, 4-poster beds and superb views.
There is no spa on site, but guests can arrange to have a treatment in their room. Play tennis and croquet on the grounds, or take one of the free tours of the house. Maps, wellies and Oscar the dog are all available to borrow from the reception desk. Further afield, Bath, Bristol, Wells, Stonehenge and Cheddar Gorge are easily reachable.
