Built in 1924 in what was formerly the Mayfair hotel, what’s now the Magnolia Hotel St. Louis was once a destination for the moneyed elite. The hotel hosted Hollywood luminaries including Douglas Fairbanks and Cary Grant, composer Irving Berlin and past U.S. presidents Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B Johnson.
In addition to historic memories, most of the original architectural details remain. Detailed woodwork, coffered ceilings and leaded glass windows are elegant without feeling outdated. Custom patterned rugs and updated lighting and artwork blend new and old. Rooms are on the smaller size as befits a hotel dating back to the 20s but past guests rave on TripAdvisor about the comfy pillowtop beds and soothing cream and canary yellow color palette.
Business travelers staying here can hit the snooze button, the sprawling America’s Convention Center is a three minute walk around the corner. No trip to St. Louis is complete without a look at the iconic Gateway Arch, fifteen minutes by foot from the hotel.
Peek in at the hotel’s ballroom and you’re likely to find a wedding party celebrating in the expansive two story space perfect for partying. Floor to ceiling windows have glittering views of downtown and crystal chandeliers dangle below an second floor balustrade.
After spying on the happy couple and friends, get a bite to eat at on-site Robie’s, named for the character Cary Grant played in “To Catch A Thief.”
