Set on 30 gorgeous waterfront acres on the island's north-east coast, The Verandah Resort & Spa is a low-key and laid-back option for a family vacation. The resort is fairly remote, but it's ideal for discovering Antigua’s raw beauty -- Devil's Bridge National Park, with its natural limestone arch, is just around the bay, and Green Island and Great Bird Island nature sanctuaries are a boat ride away.
Of the many beach resorts in the region, this is "one of the most family-friendly", says Travel + Leisure. Not only is there a separate children’s pool and supervised 'Kidz Club' (complete with a playground), there’s also direct access to two sandy beaches off the reef-protected Dian Bay, where the crystal-clear waters are calm enough for little ones to paddle. This resort isn’t just about the kids, though. It's also home to a secluded adults-only pool, four on-site bars and a spa for classic massages and more unusual treatments like caviar facials and seaweed wraps. For something more active, try your hand at kayaking, snorkelling or windsurfing in the bay, or book a game at one of the on-site tennis courts.
There are three dining options on site, including the main open-air restaurant for buffet dining and the family-friendly Buccaneer restaurant (open for afternoon tea and dinner only). For fine dining, Nicole’s is located right off the beach and serves Caribbean-influenced fare in an elegant, warm setting (not included in the all-inclusive plan).
Described by Fodor's as "New England-meets-Creole", the bungalow-style suites and villas sit on top of stilts, and each has a wooden veranda with views of the gardens or the ocean. The best are right on the waterfront. Families are well catered for -- there are fold-out sofa beds in the living rooms and kitchenettes, and each sleeps at least four. Opt for a 2-bedroom villa, accommodating up to six, for more space.
