Dubbed "a gem" by Frommer's, The Normandy Hotel is a quiet, sophisticated place, surrounded by statuesque residential properties on tree-lined Wyoming Avenue. It's hidden in leafy Kalorama, "one of Washington's loveliest neighborhoods", says The Washington Post, and is only 15 minutes on foot from Dupont Circle's restaurants, shops and metro station.
Sights such as the White House and the Smithsonian are easily accessible by metro, but don't miss lesser known local museums like the Phillips Collection art gallery and the Textile Museum, both a 10-minute walk away.
There's no restaurant on site but a full continental breakfast (pastries, fruit and cereal) is served in the pretty conservatory, and there is free tea and coffee provided in the lounge throughout the day. Guests can curl up by the lobby fireplace in the winter or sun themselves on the terrace in the summer. Don't miss the evening gatherings, when free wine, cheese and chocolates are served in the lobby. Nearby, there are plenty of restaurants on Connecticut Avenue (half a block away) and in Adams Morgan has an eclectic mix of nightclubs and bars.
Standard rooms are beautifully done in an art deco style, with velvet upholstery, quilted bedspreads and mirror-topped tables. Bathrooms have been finished in marble, and some rooms have toile wallpaper and 4-poster beds. Upgrade to a Deluxe room for French doors overlooking pretty Wyoming Avenue (some with Juliet balconies) and private access to the garden terrace to the front.
