Described as "one of the best places to play golf in the state", by Fodor's, the 410-acre Resort at Long Boat Key Club is an upmarket beach resort on the shores of Sarasota Bay, with lots to offer.
As well as two waterside golf courses, the hotel also has a private beach, a 291-slip marina and 20 top-class tennis courts (it was named America's top tennis resort spot in 2012 by Tennis magazine).
The hotel is fairly secluded -- Longboat Key is one of the few barrier islands in the Sarasota area without direct mainland access -- but six restaurants ensure plenty of dining variety, and there’s live evening entertainment in the lounge (Wednesday-Saturday).
Farm-to-table dining is the specialty at The Tavern & Whiskey Bar, with the emphasis on local seasonal food sourced from its own gardens and 30 Florida growers, farmers and fishermen. Alternatively, dine at the romantic Sands Pointe and enjoy views over the Gulf of Mexico.
There's also a large spa, with 12 treatment rooms and a fitness centre, plus a kid's club (Tuesday-Saturday). A multitude of water sports is also on offer, from kayaking to paddle-boarding.
Spacious rooms are finished with dark-wood furniture, mini kitchens and private balconies that face the beach, lagoon or golf course. Suites are considerably larger than standard rooms, plus full kitchens and fold-out sofas make them handy for families.
Note: $24-$36 resort fee (per room, per night, depending on season), which includes Wi-Fi, access to the tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, use of the beach cabanas, umbrellas, loungers and towels, and access to the spa.
