More Room Types

White-sand beaches, mild temperatures and a laid-back attitude make Guernsey in the Channel Islands a popular spot for a short break. Set just a 10-minute walk from the bustling St Peter Port, Old Government House Hotel & Spa is the island's only 5-star hotel and has won the best hotel in Guernsey title from the World Travel Awards for five years running (2009–2013).

Originally built as the Governor's House it became a hotel in 1858, before it was occupied during World War II. Today the manor house is full of character, with a grand entrance, wooden floorboards and rambling corridors.

There are a number of room types, all elegantly finished, but the most impressive are the Seaview Kings with picturesque views of the harbour and nearby Sark and Herm islands (some also have small balconies). Complimentary Wi-Fi and Internet TVs are standard in every room. Pets are welcome and families are well provided for.

When the weather's warm, take the rather lavish breakfast (served with sparkling wine) or afternoon tea outside at the Olive Grove, overlooking the ocean. For dinner, there are two restaurants -- the Brasserie and the Curry Room, which has 2-AA-Rosettes and was praised by The AA Restaurant Guide for its "smart modish-looking Indian dishes which steer clear of cliché". Sample delights such as the trio of aubergine with minted yoghurt, white fish and calamari curry, and rosewater rice pudding.

Guests have complimentary access to the outdoor pool and on-site Revolution Health club which has a gym, relaxation suite, sauna and steam room plus two whirlpools. Spa treatments are also available (charges apply).

From the press:
  • "I can find no fault with the elegance and attention to detail of their bedrooms" -- The Daily Telegraph
  • "Given it was once the official residence of the Governor, it is perhaps unsurprising that the OGH (as it is known) is in such a plum spot overlooking the old town and harbour" -- The AA Hotel Guide

Getting there

There are regular flights to Guernsey from the UK mainland, and ferry crossings from the UK's south coast take as little as two hours and 45 minutes. It's a 15-minute drive from Guernsey’s airport to the hotel. For those arriving by ferry, it's also a 20-minute walk uphill from the port. The hotel is in the capital so you can do without a car, but it might be worth renting one if you want to explore the island.
