Set right on the sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach, the Pelican Grand Beach Resort is a family resort with a low-key atmosphere and amazing views. Renovated in 2013, it still has lots of character with its high-rise towers and a Key West-style veranda and rocking chairs.
The 500-metre private beach has loungers, towels, inflatables and umbrellas that guests can use for free. There is also a zero-entry heated pool on site and a palm-shaded lazy river with tubes to borrow for floating down the course.
"A favorite of locals in the know", according to Fodor's, the Ocean 2000 restaurant is an excellent choice for small plates, seafood with a Latin twist and a rather yummy Sunday brunch. In the summer, request a seat out on the terrace for views of the ocean. There's also a 1950s-style ice cream parlour (7am-11pm) for retro treats.
The spacious rooms were also renovated in 2013, and are quite charming, with quilted bedspreads, iron bed frames and white furniture. Hidden in the cupboard you’ll find a microwave, fridge and coffee maker (with free coffee). Many rooms have a furnished balcony, some overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and the best facing the ocean. Opt for a suite for more space and a separate living room. There is also a small in-house gym.
The surrounding area is a little removed from Las Olas Boulevard, the main shopping and restaurant strip, which is a 10-minute drive. Those without cars can rent a bike using the Broward B-cycle sharing system (there's a stand nearby).
There is a $15 per-room, per-night resort fee, which covers pool towels, umbrellas and lounge chairs on the beach and Wi-Fi access.
