New in 2011, Hotel Grums is "small but impeccable" with "much to offer", says Fodor's. Located in Poble Sec, an urban residential neighbourhood, it’s an easy walk from the harbour (making it an excellent choice for a pre- or post-cruise stay).
Las Ramblas, known for its shops, restaurants and street entertainment, and attractions such as the Palau Güell and the Picasso Museum are a similar distance. If you don't feel like walking, the nearest metro (Paral∙lel) is just five minutes away.
The hotel's huge outdoor terrace is ideal for a lazy al fresco breakfast or evening drinks at the funky bar (open 7-11pm). Free tea, coffee and hot chocolate are provided in the lobby in the afternoon, and there's an on-site restaurant for Mediterranean dishes.
Another highlight is the swish spa with a small pool, Finnish sauna, steam bath and ice fountain (charges apply). Treatments, from massages to oxygen facials, are also available.
The bright, modern rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden floors and cute rugs. Complimentary bottled water is replenished daily. The bathrooms are a little unusual -- some have sinks outside the bathroom and others are glass walled -- but all are perfectly functional and come with either walk-in showers or bathtubs.
Larger rooms have fold-out beds to accommodate families and the Terrace room on the sixth floor has the biggest balcony. Interestingly, each room comes with an information pack about a specific Barcelona landmark, street, festival or figure, and every floor has a different theme, from famous sights to the city's architecture. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel
