This 4-star country-house hotel is located on the site of an 11th-century church, just over three miles from Stratford-upon-Avon and 12 miles from Warwick.
Steeped in history, the Elizabethan manor boasts 11 acres of grounds incorporating a 100-year-old topiary garden, a fountain and the church where William Shakespeare reportedly married Anne Hathaway.
Warwick Castle, Charlecote Park, Tudor World and Ragley Hall, one of England's finest Palladian mansions, are all less than a 20-minute drive away. The pretty town of Stratford-upon-Avon, where you'll find Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage and Mary Arden's Farm, is less than 10 minutes by car.
Facilities at the hotel include a health club with a fully equipped gym, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna and a steam room, plus tennis courts, a yoga hut and beauty rooms. Alternatively, kick back with the newspapers in the library, reputedly visited by Shakespeare himself.
The hotel offers the AA-Rosette Stuart Restaurant, with oak panelling and a fireplace, and The Great Hall with its minstrels' gallery, both situated in the old manor house. The AA praises the Stuart Restaurant for cooking that is "impressive" and "accomplished", with dishes such as confit rabbit and foie gras terrine, king scallops with black pudding hash and loin of Everleigh Farm venison with spiced pear.
Rooms are split between the Manor House and the Cedar Barns, all with traditional décor and views of the hotel grounds. The AA says the "spacious bedrooms and suites" in a "country-house style" are "thoughtfully designed and well equipped". Dog-friendly rooms are available on request. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
