BEST WESTERN York House Hotel boasts uninterrupted views of the coastline from its position on Eastbourne's promenade. It is a few steps from the beach, and a short stroll from the centre of Eastbourne. With a 3.5-mile, tree-lined seafront, it is "one of the UK's grandest" promenades, according to Lonely Planet. This 85-room Victorian hotel offers panoramic sea views from its two restaurants and from many of its bedrooms.
As well as holding an enviable seaside location, this hotel is also close to many of East Sussex's attractions. It is a 10-minute stroll from Eastbourne town centre, and Beachy Head -- a "spot of thrilling beauty" (Lonely Planet) on the Sussex Heritage Coast -- is less than four miles from the hotel. The remains of Battle Abbey, which was built to commemorate the Battle of Hastings, are 35 minutes by car. Brighton's famous Lanes and pier can be reached in an hour by car or by train.
Facilities at the hotel include a heated indoor swimming pool, which is free for guests to use, and an open-roof sun terrace. The lounge area in reception, the restaurant and the bar all overlook the seafront. The Verandah Restaurant serves seasonal and locally sourced produce. We like the sound of the baked cod parcel and gratin dauphinoise, and the vanilla and berry cheesecake served with berry coulis.
Bedrooms are modern and equipped with Wi-Fi, with dog-friendly rooms available upon request. Sea View rooms are slightly more spacious and offer views over the seafront. Family rooms also offer sea views but are much larger and can accommodate two adults and one child or three adults (for an extra charge). Daily parking vouchers are available from reception at a reduced rate for hotel guests, but spaces are not guaranteed.
