More Room Types

Spread across three 19th-century buildings, with neoclassical arches and glimmering glass, the Place d'Armes Hotel is an imposing property. Sitting on a pretty square by the Basilique Notre-Dame in historic Old Montreal, the property's location is ideal for sightseeing, within walking distance of Chinatown and downtown action. It's an area well known for its gastronomy and sights such as the Old Port and the Palais des Congrès.

Back at the hotel, expect exposed brick walls, plenty of dark wood and high ceilings in the bedrooms. Pricier rooms are carpeted and have fireplaces and some come with balconies. Each has a walk-in shower or a shower over the bath and suites have both a jetted bath and a walk-in shower. Rooms at the front can be noisy so request a room to the rear to ensure a quiet night's sleep.

The hotel isn't short of hip dining options. Suite 701, the hotel’s modern French brasserie and bar, is especially popular with the after-work crowd and the rooftop terrace is "one of the city’s hottest nightspots", says Travel + Lesiure. New in 2013, the trendy Izakaya restaurant serves Japanese specialities such as sushi, noodles, miso soup and grilled black cod, alongside 25 brands of sake.

After a day exploring the district's cobbled streets, guests can unwind in the hammam (reportedly the first in the city) or book in for a treatment at the 278-square-metre spa. There's also a gym for those looking to keep up with their fitness regime and a billiard table in the lobby. Don't miss the nearby Underground City (or RESO) -- it's one of the largest underground shopping and dining complexes in the world, all connected by pedestrian walkways and the underground system -- the nearest entrance to the hotel is the Place d'Armes metro station, a block away.
