Appleby Manor Country House Hotel is a family-run hotel with stunning views over Eden Valley and nearby Appleby Castle. The hotel is well placed for hiking holidays, sandwiched between the Lake District fells, the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and has well-tended gardens, which are a pleasure to wander around.
It may be an hour by car from popular tourist spot Lake Windermere, but the off-the-beaten-track location and Cumbrian vistas make this a shrewd option for a serene country retreat. Fairy-tale Lowther Castle and its 130 acres of gardens (open daily, 10am-5pm) are only 30 minutes' drive away. When the weather is less amenable guests can take a dip in the small indoor pool or relax in the Jacuzzi, sauna or steam room. There's also a well-equipped games room for a spot of pool or a game of table tennis.
Awarded a rosette by The AA Restaurant Guide for its "country-house cooking", the oak-panelled restaurant serves traditional favourites such as roast lamb and supreme of salmon. Be sure to order a cheese course -- the cheese trolley has an exceptional selection. There's also a conservatory with direct access to the garden patio and the charming bar has a lengthy list of malt whiskies.
Spread between the main manor, a coach house annex and the newer garden wing, rooms are furnished with country-style furniture and have views over the golf course, gardens or fells beyond. Rooms in the original house are the most traditional, and the upgraded categories come with Jacuzzi tubs, walk-in showers and TVs in the bathroom mirrors. Family rooms, complete with pull-out beds and extra space, are also available.
