The Gardens, NYC - an Affinia Hotel is a treat for families, with suites starting at 400-600 square feet, everyone can spread out and claim their territory. The kitchen area is tiny but sufficient, and cabinets have cups and plates ready for use.
At nearly three times the size of an average New York City hotel room, these suites are very spacious but nothing fancy. The overall theme in the rooms is modern and functional, a theme echoed throughout the hotel. Amenities are sufficient for a luxury hotel but Wi-Fi charges add up and can be slow at times. The interior of the hotel is modern and clean and the lobby is a good place to rest but don't expect glitz and glamor. The exterior hasn't changed since the hotel's days as a high-end apartment complex, it looks like a residential building but it's not out of place in this neighborhood.
There's no on-site restaurant but room service is surprisingly good and doesn't "break the bank." The restaurants that are in the area are high-end, reservations are required and meals are pricey -- costing $50-$65 per person. For family-friendly or budget-friendly options venture to Second or Third Avenue along the same street.
New York's common tourist traps are quite a distance from this hotel, it's better suited to be a base for museum lovers and shopping enthusiasts. Save museum hopping for the morning because shops are open longer than most museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a must, it's a 30-minute walk or a $15 cab ride from the hotel, opt for the cab ride if it's a hot day. Other museums are in a 10-15 minute walking distance once at the MET and can easily take up the majority of the day. Be sure to cram in lunch, museums don't allow outside food.
The famous stretch of luxe shopping that is Madison and Fifth Avenue are just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. After an exhausting shopping spree, find a bench in Central Park -- an additional two-minute walk -- set down all your designer shopping bags and bask in the only natural surrounding for miles.
The hotel also enjoys proximity to two major hospitals -- ambulance noise isn't an issue -- Memorial Sloan Kettering and Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital. This is the closest hotel to both hospitals, while still being nearby to shops, restaurants and sights.
