The boutique Lorien Hotel & Spa’s traditional feel perfectly matches its setting among red-brick houses on a quiet tree-lined street in the heart of Old Town Alexandria.
Downtown Washington, D.C., is 20 minutes away by train, and the King Street Metro station is only two blocks away. Borrow a free bike from the hotel and explore the 18-mile-long Mount Vernon Trail, which runs along the river. Be sure to return in time for the hotel’s complimentary evening wine hour in the lobby.
On-site dining includes Brabo -- a local favorite -- serving an American take on Belgian classics, and the more casual Tasting Room with an impressive beer selection, mussels and wood-fired tarts. You can also enjoy meals on the rooftop terrace, where there are fire pits for cooler evenings. There’s also the Butcher's Block, a gourmet market next door for freshly baked bread and meals to go.
Classically decorated rooms have big bathrooms and many feature a claw-foot tub or a rainfall shower. Thoughtful extras include telescopes, blankets and sleeping bags for stargazing on the balconies (some rooms only) and a Dream service menu to ensure a good night’s sleep.
The spa is petite but well-regarded, with his-and-hers steam rooms and a range of treatments. As the only hotel spa in the city it can be busy, so it’s best to book in advance. There’s also a 24-hour fitness room, equipped with a full range of machines and free weights.
Travelzoo Tip: Make sure you visit the Port City Brewing Company, a new craft brewery in town that offers tasting tours Wednesday through Sunday for $9 per person.
