Muckross Park Hotel is a grand country-house hotel on the Blue Pool River, 10 minutes' drive from Killarney town centre and just off the Ring of Kerry driving route. The property dates back to the 1700s and previous guests include Queen Victoria and George Bernard Shaw, who wrote "Pygmalion" here. Under new ownership since 2014, the hotel is known for its warm welcome, friendly staff and a very good concierge service.
The hotel is in the Killarney National Park, which has "sublime scenery" (Lonely Planet), 25,000 acres of parkland and three lakes. Hire a boat to row across to Innisfallen Island, where there's a 7th-century monastery, or walk 20 minutes to Muckross House, a 19th-century mansion, and its neighbouring farms, which reproduce conditions of a Kerry farm in the 1930s and '40s, and have chickens, horses and cattle. Other local sights include the Torc Waterfall, Muckross Abbey and Ross Castle. You can hire a jaunting car, borrow one of the hotel's bikes or explore on foot -- the hotel provides free maps of the local area.
Breakfast at the hotel is a real treat -- the buffet includes local yoghurt and homemade honeycomb, and you can request cooked-to-order options too. Yew Tree Restaurant is known for its "inventive" modern Irish dining (The Irish Independent), using local Kerry beef and lamb, and Atlantic seafood (open Tuesday, Thursday-Sunday). Afternoon tea is served daily from 12:30-5:30pm in the Monk's Lounge, where there's an open fire and leather sofas. A light lounge menu is also served throughout the day and there are bigger bistro-style dishes at dinner too. For traditional Irish fare, try The Jarvey's Rest pub next door, which does hearty stews, steak and mussels, and has live music and Irish dancing from 8pm on five nights of the week, from March-October. There's also a spa, with a hydrotherapy pool, thermal baths, a steam room, a sauna and an outdoor hot tub.
Rooms are Victorian in style, with velvet drapes and gold furnishings. Even the standard option is large, and all have free bottled water and Wi-Fi. Superior King rooms and above come with a bottle of wine and welcome chocolates, or opt for a suite to get a free mini bar as well. There are pleasant views of the grounds from some rooms. The hotel also has 1- and 2-bedroom self-catering apartments, with a kitchenette and a living room.
