The southern French town of Carcassonne has history in abundance, with an "immaculately preserved medieval fortress", "dramatic, turreted walls" and "fairytale" credentials, says Red magazine. Grab a rarely discounted break to this gem in Languedoc -- a 3-night escape at a luxury Relais & Châteaux hotel, plus a Michelin-starred dinner, is now £299 per person.
For £200 less than usual, you get:
The hotel is surrounded by a 300-year-old park on the historic hilltop site of Carsac. Dining options at the Domaine d'Auriac include a fine-dining restaurant and a French bistro serving local produce. There's an 18-hole golf course, a swimming pool, tennis courts and a terrace overlooking the gardens.
The ancient Cité of Carcassonne -- a World Heritage Site -- is three miles away and it's a 20-minute drive to the Canal du Midi, another World Heritage Site.
Red recommends entering the Cité's fortress through the thick double walls by the main car park "for the most visually impressive entrance". "Explore the narrow, cobbled streets" and spend "some time walking around the top of the ramparts" for the best views, it says. The food is also worth a mention -- try cassoulet, a traditional dish of sausages and beans.
