It's well known as the birthplace of port, but historic Porto and the Douro Valley is also home to long sandy beaches, Roman ruins, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a top foodie scene. Explore this unspoilt region from a 5-star hotel for £249 per person -- that's up to half the usual price.
This treat-filled package from Fleetway Travel includes:
The boutique hotel is in the town of Amarante, between Porto and the remote Douro Valley, where port wine is produced. Built in the 16th century, the former manor house has a spa, a bar overlooking the Casa da Calçada vineyards and two swimming pools with views of the River Tâmega. There's also free Wi-Fi and the hotel has a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2013.
Deluxe Rooms overlook the Tâmega river and St Gonçalo's Monastery, and have large marble bathrooms stocked with local CastelBel products.
You can hire a bike from the hotel to explore Amarante and the surrounding gardens and farm. The Daily Telegraph describes a trip to Porto as "the perfect break" -- wander the cobbled streets in the city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and don't miss a trip to the Alto Douro wine region, where grapes are still crushed by foot.
