Condé Nast Traveller calls LaGare a "grand waterside lantern", with its "wondrous" lighting designed by renowned Murano glass artist Venini. Set in a 13th-century former monastery that became a glass-making workshop in the 1800s, the hotel has a permanent exhibition of the island's famous glass work.
As well as a fine-dining restaurant looking out over a courtyard, there's a bar, a drinks terrace, a library and free Wi-Fi throughout.
In the morning, you can watch as local fishermen and farmers set up a floating market on the Grand Canal, and by evening explore the island's winding waterways and many glass studios. The hotel offers a free shuttle service to St Mark's Square, which is 15 minutes away by boat, as well as the Santa Lucia railway station and the Piazzale Roma bus station.
