Sri Lanka was recently named the best-value destination in the Post Office's Long Haul Report, and with British Airways launching a new route to Colombo in 2013, there could hardly be a better time to go. The 4-star Eden Resort & Spa offers direct access to Beruwala's "golden mile" of beach on the island's tropical southwest coast. There is an outdoor pool, two bars and restaurants serving Sri Lankan, Indian and western food. Eden rooms have wooden floors and a private balcony overlooking the gardens. Nearby attractions include the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, the traditional Buddhist temple at Kalutara and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a wildlife-rich national park that is home to leopards, monkeys and elephants. You are also less than an hour's drive from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle -- a city that Lonely Planet calls "a living time capsule" and home to a 300-year-old Dutch fort.
