The luxury Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort is near Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, on the northern tip of Borneo, the largest island in the Malay Archipelago famed for its orangutan inhabitants. Overlooking a protected marine national park, this 5-star resort boasts a private beach and a spa island named Pulau Bayu with a yoga pavilion. We've stayed here and the amenities and service were top-notch -- not to mention the evening cocktails at the Sunset Bar.
On site, there are seven restaurant and bars, a swimming pool, a kids' waterpark and a Jacuzzi, plus a range of recreational activities including t'ai chi, pilates and yoga lessons, and cooking demonstrations. There are also a number of food stalls along the beach, just a short stroll away serving fresh, local cuisine.
When we stayed here we booked cheap flights to the orangutan orphanage in Sepilok, or you can take the shuttle bus to the orangutan sanctuary at the hotel's sister resort nearby.
Set in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, the 4-star Parkroyal Hotel is just minutes from the shops, restaurants and bars of the Golden Triangle. Facilities at the hotel include a gym, an outdoor swimming pool, the St Gregory Spa and a selection of bars and restaurants.
