With demand for eco-friendly hotels and conservation breaks on the up, it seems only apt that the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day (WTD) on Thursday, 27 September, is Tourism & Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development.
Official celebrations for WTD are being held in Maspalomas, one of Gran Canaria’s most popular resorts, though hundreds of other events -- festivals, parties and concerts -- will be taking place across the globe if you want to get involved.
Sustainable tourism, at the heart of this year’s event, is described by the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation -- organiser of World Tourism Day) as "tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts". Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, explains that everyone can do their bit by "off-setting their own carbon emissions, choosing ecologically friendly destinations and providers, or simply by postponing having their towels laundered".
To honour the day, Travelzoo has put together a tidy bundle of eco-friendly offers, including a Costa Rica rainforest stay, an eco-hotel stay in the Caribbean that saves 33% and a wildlife conservation break in South Africa.
