Nothing says "quintessentially British" quite like afternoon tea. Although the classic treat has evolved somewhat since it began in the 19th century, a tiered cake stand filled with finger sandwiches, scones and cakes, alongside the essential pot of tea, is one of our favourite traditions.
This week (12-19 August) is National Afternoon Tea Week and here at Travelzoo, we’ve come up with some cracking offers to help celebrate.
Head to the Best Western Ivy Hill Hotel in Chelmsford for a traditional afternoon tea with prosecco, for £19 for two. Includes a glass of prosecco, tea or coffee, freshly baked fruit scones, cakes and a selection of open sandwiches -- a fantastic spread for less than £10 each.
Taking things to rather luxurious level is the Broadoaks Country House Hotel in Windermere; this 5-star hotel is offering two Travelzoo subscribers afternoon tea with bubbly, an experience that was described as “seriously good” by Condé Nast Johansens, for £25. You’ll get homemade scones, sandwiches and cakes alongside a glass of bubbly each, plus your choice of tea or coffee.
If you’re after a truly relaxing experience, take a look at this deal from Raithwaite Hall in Whitby. This £65 spa day with afternoon tea includes a 50-minute treatment, access to the leisure facilities and a full afternoon tea. A dip in the pool is the perfect way to burn off the finger sandwiches, homemade cakes and warm scones.
Last but not least is this winning combination from Fayrer Garden House Hotel. Overnight stays are now £159 for two and include a 3-course à la carte dinner in the 2-AA-Rosette Terrace Restaurant, as well as a cream tea with prosecco.
So, whether you like your afternoon tea served the classic way or with a more contemporary twist, make sure you raise your teacups this week in celebration of one of Britain’s finest dining traditions.
