Staycation: a holiday spent in one's home country rather than abroad -- Oxford Dictionary
Staycations have been on the up since the 2008. With the financial downturn, many Brits had to tweak the way they travelled, and lots of us opted for holidays at home rather than pricier overseas jaunts.
Brits are now spending 18% more on overnight stays in the UK than in 2008. That's a jump from £21 billion a year to £25 billion a year -- not much of a surprise when you consider how much sun we got this summer!
A further indicator of the staycation's popularity is the inclusion of 16 British destinations in this Trivago's 2013 poll of the UK's Top 50 summer destinations. It's a huge jump up from last year's two entries. London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Dublin, York, Liverpool, Brighton and Glasgow all made the top 20.
