Sustainability Shortlist

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and here’s some news that may make eco-conscious travellers smile. Six sustainable travel schemes from around the UK have been shortlisted for the 2013 Eurostar Ashden Award for Sustainable Travel.

Now in its second year, the Ashden Award recognises travel schemes that help improve quality of life while reducing congestion, pollution and CO2 emissions.

Thirteen sustainable travel schemes from the UK, France and Belgium have been shortlisted for the awards. Finalists will be announced in May, 2013, and up to two winners will be named. Winners will receive £10,000-£20,000 in prize money as well as business support, access to investors and a platform to build their profile.

The shortlist for UK companies is:

  • Stagecoach UK Bus, for an initiative aimed at converting non-public transport users
  • City of York Council, for York Park & Ride, which allows people to travel to York by car, park for free in secure car parks and head into the city on a bus for £2.50 return
  • Sustrans, a charity with a project to extend the National Cycle Network into over 80 communities across the UK; currently the network has 13,400 miles of walking and cycling routes
  • Metro, a public transport organisation that provides support for companies in West Yorkshire that promote sustainable travel to their staff
  • Transport for London, for a hybrid bus programme to reduce the environmental impact of the fleet
  • WhipCar, a service that allows car owners to rent out their vehicles when they’re not using them
