Surprise Hotel Tax for Venice
The mayor of Venice, Giorgio Orsoni, has imposed a surprise hotel bed tax, beginning this summer. Following suit with other top European tourist cities such as Florence, this move was confirmed to industry leaders at the annual ITT conference earlier this month. The extra 1€ per person, per night, charge will come into place from 1 July this year and will vary depending on the season, with a predicted lower rate from November to February. The tax will also be star-rating dependant and there will be a few exemptions such as children under 10, hostel guests and communal accommodation, coach drivers and tour guides.
The proceeds of around 20€ million a year are set to be used to help the city’s infrastructure as well as the upkeep of cultural monuments.
