Spain Takes the Lead in World's Top Restaurants List

It's no secret that food and travel go hand in hand -- new tastes are all part of experiencing another culture. Whether it's the freshest mozzarella you've ever had on a pizza in Italy or some rotten shark that's been buried for three months in Iceland, local cuisine can sometimes be the focal point of a trip. (My friend and I once changed our departure flight just so we could eat at a celebrated Madrid restaurant a second time before heading back home; Casa Botin is that good.)

If you've ever had the pleasure of eating in Spain, it should come as no surprise that one of its restaurants has recently received some hefty accolades. Knocking Copenhagen's noma from the top spot, Girona's El Celler de Can Roca has been named the World's Best Restaurant in the annual awards sponsored by San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna.

The awards list the world's 100 top restaurants. This year's list names eateries in Finland, Thailand, the US, Austria, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Australia and Sweden, to name a few. The UK gets a few mentions, with all but one restaurant being in London.

El Celler de Can Roca has been on the list for eight years; it was in second place last year. In the Top 10 alone, there are three Spanish restaurants, with two San Sebastian restaurants taking fourth and eighth place.

Noma, by the way, has now been relegated to second place after three consecutive years in poll position.

Oh, and if you're looking to eat at any of these restaurants on your next trip, be sure to book well in advance. These hot seats are sure to go fast. Have a look for hotels in Spain & Portugal, hotels in Asia, hotels in the US, hotels in Europe and hotels in London.
