I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside: Newquay

Perched on Cornwall’s north coast, Newquay is a lively seaside town that never fails to pull in the crowds. Each year thousands of visitors, known to the locals as “emmets”, flock to the town famed as the UK’s surf capital.

Newquay has an impressive 11 beaches, the most popular being Tolcarne and the world-renowned Fistral, a favourite with surfers thanks to its huge swells.

Beaches aside, Newquay is also known for its buzzing nightlife, scrumptious seafood restaurants and summer festivals and events. We recommend:

Newquay Fish Festival
Now in its 10th year, this unique festival (think stalls upon stalls of local produce and live cookery demos) has become a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. It takes place in Newquay Harbour from 14-16 September.

English National Surfing Championships 2012

See some of the country’s best surfers battle the breaks at Watergate Bay. Postponed from earlier in the month because of the weather, this is now taking place on 26 and 27 May.

Royal Cornwall Show
This 3-day agricultural show is a good old-fashioned day out for all the family. Now in its 219th year, the show is a celebration of local food and farming. There will be lots of food and drink stalls and farm animal displays, plus a flower show, a motor show and even a traditional steam engine display. Takes place 7-9 June at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge (roughly 10 miles from Newquay).

Boardmasters 2012
This year’s loud and proud Boardmasters festival takes place from 8-12 August at venues in both Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach. Combining surfing, skating, BMXing and music, it’s the only event of its kind in Europe. The line-up includes a 2-day music festival, the BMX Vans Summer Sessions and the 6-Star Men’s Surfing Series.
