Five of our favourite deals for £50 or less
There’s only one place to start. It’s a Las Vegas hotel deal of such insanely bargainous proportions, we struggled to believe it was real: £47 per person for a 5-night stay at the Riviera Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Yep, that’s the equivalent of £9.40 per night. This is one of those times when you’re just going to have to trust us. It’s valid for arrivals on 11 June, and with discounted fares available via Virgin Atlantic, there could hardly be a better time to visit Sin City.
Moving from one end of the cultural spectrum to the other, here’s a fantastic offer for a treat-filled Barcelona stay. For the equivalent of £32.50 each, this deal from the 4-star Hotel Grums includes bed and breakfast, a free welcome drink and complimentary spa access. We can tell what you’re thinking: that you’ll probably be 10 miles out of the city for that price. Not so. The hotel is at the foot of Montjuic, next to Barcelona's harbour and 10 minutes from Las Ramblas. So there.
Michael Winner is probably best known for three things: producing and directing films of appalling quality, appearing in those horrible esure adverts (“Calm down, dear, it’s only a commercial”) and being The Sunday Times’ notoriously harsh restaurant critic. But even he was won over by the charms of The Tollgate Inn near Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire, describing it as “a typically pretty English inn set in a typically pretty English village”. Perhaps he’s not so bad after all. If he’s a Travelzoo subscriber, this deal should make his day -- £39 for a 3-course meal for two and a glass of prosecco each.
Musicals seem to have a curiously divisive effect. You’re either the type who buys into the experience wholeheartedly, or you’re the one who sits there wondering why they keep singing when a normal conversation might do. However cynical you are, it’s just possible that you’ll be won over by “Billy Elliot”. Set to Elton John's score and based on the hit film of the same name, it’s been called "the best musical of the decade" by TIME Magazine and won just about every award going. And if that’s not enough to persuade you, maybe the price will. For £37.50 -- 40% cheaper than usual -- you can bag yourself top-price Stalls or Dress Circle seats at all Monday-Thursday performances from 20 February-29 March.
Half-price family-fun alert! This deal from Alton Towers Resort saves 49% on regular rates, works out at £14.75 per person for a family of four, and is more or less guaranteed to keep the entire brood happy. Not only do you get accommodation in either the Alton Towers or Splash Landings Hotel with breakfast, but tickets to the Alton Towers Waterpark are also thrown in. That means unlimited access to the likes of the Tipping Bucket, Rush 'n' Rampage, the Lazy River and the Master Blaster Water Coaster. Remember to let your kids have a turn occasionally.
