The launch of our Philadelphia Destination page sparked a mass exodus from the Travelzoo London office -- all that talk of Philly cheesesteaks had us heading to the nearest diner for a crusty roll piled high with rib eye steak and dripping with cheese.
And while the great cheesesteak debate continues across the pond (Where’s best? With or without onions? What kind of cheese?), it seems that Little Philly has more strings to its calorie-laden bow. A foodie scene has emerged of late, led by top chefs including Jose Garces, Eric Ripert and Jennifer Carroll; you’re as likely to find waterfront dining and farmer’s markets as you are fast-food joints.
There’s a burgeoning cultural scene in Philadelphia, too, with a slew of museums and galleries along tree-lined Benjamin Franklin Parkway, plus world-class art collections at the newly opened Barnes Foundation. Throw in 215 miles of park trails and historic sites like the Liberty Bell, which rang out as the US Declaration of Independence was signed, and we think it sounds like a top place to visit.
