About the show: Adapted and directed by Daniel Buckroyd, "The Butterfly Lion" is an "absorbing tale", says The Stage. It tells the story of Bertie, who grows up in South Africa and makes friends with an orphaned lion cub. When Bertie returns to England and the cub is sold to a circus, his life takes some dramatic turns before they are reunited, years later. The cast includes Gwen Taylor, known for roles in "Heartbeat" and "Coronation Street".
The novel won the Writers' Guild Award for Children's Fiction as well as the 1996 Nestlé Smarties Book Prize. Morpurgo, whose novel "War Horse" went on to become a smash hit on both stage and screen, says "The Butterfly Lion" is his favourite of all the books he has written.
