Christmas is the perfect time to get together with friends and family. Whether you want to get your fill of glühwein and mince pies, sing classic Christmas carols or learn all about our festive traditions, we've found an assortment of Christmas markets and free events taking place all over London in the coming months, so you can eat, drink and be merry without hurting your Christmas-present budget.

Here are some of London's highlights:

  • The Tate Modern Christmas Market has German bratwurst, roasted chestnuts, glühwein, German beer, unique Christmas gifts and a children's fairground with a Victorian carousel. Free entry until 23 December, from 11am-8pm Monday-Thursday; 11am-10pm Friday; 10am-10pm Saturday; 10am-8pm Sunday

  • Covent Garden's Great Christmas Pudding Race is sure to fill you with festive cheer -- watch fancy-dress-wearing teams of six race around an obstacle course, while balancing a Christmas pudding on a paper plate! Free to attend, 3 December from 11am; first race begins at 12:10pm

  • Take in views of the Thames at the London Bridge Markets, browse stalls selling chocolate, cheese, festive decorations and more, or enjoy a pint at the market's bar. Free entry, 30 November-3 January from 10am-8pm

  • Visit Columbia Road Flower Market's Christmas Wednesdays event -- over 60 independent shops will open their doors until 9pm, with carols around a Christmas tree to look forward to. Free to attend, 30 November; 7, 14, 21 December from 5-9pm

  • Islington Christmas Market will be held at the Angel Central Shopping Centre N1 this year. There will be an assortment of regular traders' stalls to browse throughout its run, along with new stalls being introduced each week. Free entry until 24 December, from 10am-6pm Monday-Thursday; 10am-7pm Friday; 10am-6pm Saturday; 12-5pm Sunday

  • Watch Christmas classics such as "It's a Wonderful Life", "Miracle on 34th Street" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" in various locations around Herne Hill with the Twelve Films of Christmas event. Free to attend, 4-21 December (times vary)

  • Christmas in Leicester Square is new for 2016, with a traditional Christmas market, a programme of theatrical acts by Underbelly, Ursula Martinez and La Soirée circus, and a grotto. The Christmas market is free to enter (additional fees apply for the grotto and shows) until 8 January

  • Be greeted by Santa and his reindeer at the Monocle Christmas Market, taking place at the magazine's Marylebone office. Sample international treats from the Monocle Café and take part in the tombola. Free to enter, 3-4 December from 11am-5pm

  • Get yourself to King's Cross Square for the Real Food Christmas Market, with a feast of artisan food and drink to enjoy. Pick up cheeses, meats, pies, cakes and much more! Free to attend, 14-23 December from 12-9pm daily

  • Learn more about festive traditions and see how Christmas has been celebrated over the past 400 years at the Geffrye Museum of the Home, with each room featuring unique decorations. Free entry until 8 January, Tuesday-Sunday from 10am-5pm

  • The Southbank Centre Winter Market includes a choice of festive shows and performances, a Christmas-themed rock 'n' roll musical, and a Christmas market with cakes, cheeses, hot foods and gift ideas for everyone. Free to attend, additional fees for performances, until 8 January from 10am-10pm daily

  • Listen to your favourite classic Christmas carols in Trafalgar Square, with over 50 carol groups singing classics such as singing "Deck the Halls" and "Ding Dong Merrily on High" around a Christmas tree, which has been given to the UK by Norway since 1947. Free to attend in December (exact dates to be confirmed)

  • Now in its 10th year, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland boasts over 100 fairground rides, the UK's largest open-air ice rink, an ice bar, a circus, an observation wheel, Santa Land and a Christmas market with over 200 Bavarian-style chalets. Free entry (additional fees for rides and performances) until 2 January from 10am-10pm every day
