"In spring, the Dutch bulbfields are a riot of colour," says The Telegraph. And that's just one of the perks of this tempting 2015 river cruise -- along with coach travel from across the UK and all of your meals. At £345 per person, this deal from Travelwasp blows the competition out of the water.
Depart on 8, 11, 14, 17 or 20 April, 2015.
After boarding in Amsterdam, you'll settle into your cabin before joining a welcome cocktail party. After dinner the ship sets out to the Markermeer, mooring overnight in the former fishing village and artists' retreat of Volendam. On day two you can wander through the quaint streets of Volendam, before cruising across to Lelystad. From there you can join an optional excursion** to the garden city of Apeldoorn and Het Loo Palace, the former Dutch royal residence. Next on the list is Zaandam, with its windmills and colourful houses that were once subjects for Claude Monet.
Day three starts with a trip to the world-famous Keukenhof Gardens, with its seven million flowers that carpet the ground in a vivid display of colour. There you can relax in a café or take a boat ride** through the gardens. Then either return to the MS Olympia or join an optional canal boat tour** of Amsterdam -- "the best way to truly get a feel for the city's quaint 17th-century buildings and picturesque curved bridges" (Fodor's). The day is topped off with the Captain's farewell dinner, before the journey home the following morning.
MS Olympia is an intimate vessel with just 49 cabins, and a large observation deck with sun loungers. The restaurant's regional cuisine is accompanied by local wines and beers. A lounge and bar with live music is on board.
Instead of coach travel, fly from Liverpool, London Gatwick, Luton, Southend, Stansted or Manchester for £150 more per person. Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Humberside, Leeds Bradford and Southampton flights are an extra £180 per person.
