This exclusive deal from Imagine Cruising couples a stay in central Lisbon with an all-inclusive cruise along the Douro River. From Porto, you'll meander past steep hillsides of vineyard terraces in the Douro Valley -- one of the world's oldest wine-producing regions -- to charming Portuguese towns and ancient cities, for £1199 per person.
Flights depart from London Gatwick on 31 October. Travel on 2 April for £1399 per person, or on 18 July; 1 August for £1499 per person.
Visit the Imagine Cruising website for more information.
The trip begins with a 2-night stay in Lisbon at the boutique Skyna Hotel Lisboa. The hotel has a central location, less than 10 minutes' walk from Avenida da Liberdade. On-site facilities include a restaurant and two bars.
You'll be transferred to Porto, Portugal's second-largest city and the birthplace of port, for the start of the cruise. The ship stays in Porto overnight, giving you a chance to visit the city's Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of medieval lanes and plazas.
The cruise continues down the Douro to the town of Peso da Régua, where you can visit the Baroque Mateus Palace in nearby Vila Real (supplements apply).
The next morning, you'll cruise to Vega de Terron, stopping at pretty Pinhão en route. Fodor's says, "Pinhão is heaven on earth for oenophiles, who can visit quintas (vineyards), tour the facilities, and sip port and wine to their hearts' content".
Once in Vega de Terron, you can take an excursion to the ancient Spanish city of Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (supplements apply). Must-sees include the 18th-century Plaza Mayor, where we recommend stopping for churros in a café, and the university, one of the oldest in Europe.
The next port of call is Barca d'Alva, as you travel back to Pinhão for a guided tour and a dinner at a traditional quinta. You'll stop at Pocinho along the way. The cruise ends back in Porto, for the return flight to the UK.
Facilities include the Panorama Restaurant, which serves Portuguese cuisine and local wine from the Douro Valley as well as international dishes, a bar and a sun deck with a swimming pool and deck chairs.
The atmosphere on board is relaxed. Evening entertainment includes quizzes, live music, cards and theme evenings.
MS Douro Cruiser is part of the Nicko Cruises fleet. Nicko Cruises is a German line that specialise in river journeys. Announcements, menus and excursions provided in both German and English.
