Mini Travel Guide to Murcia

Head to the pedestrianised streets of Murcia’s old centre and take a look at its ornate 14th-century cathedral. Inside, the Cathedral Museum houses religious objects and archaeological finds from the site of the cathedral. Also worth a look is the Museo de Bellas Artes de Murcia, a museum dedicated to Spanish art.

Beyond the city itself, there are many places of interest to entice the visitor. The historic city of Cartagena, which boasts an array of Modernist buildings and ancient Roman sites is just an hour from Murcia by bus.

Also popular with visitors to the region is the Mar Menor (small sea), a vast, shallow saltwater lagoon which is ideal for swimming and watersports.

Buses and trains also run from Murcia to Lorca where tourists can visit the castle, which is also known as the Fortress of the Sun. There are also several museums in the city, including an archaeological museum with a large collection of artefacts from Lorca’s Roman and Muslim history.

Lovers of the great outdoors should head to the Parque Natural de Sierra Espuña, a mountainous park which is about a 40-minute drive from Murcia.
