Amsterdam has such a distinctive and singular identity that no-one has any problem conjuring up an image of the city. Typically it’s an image that encompasses elaborate waterways and quaint cobbled streets, thriving cafe culture and hedonistic nightlife, plus a local population with a famously laid-back and progressive approach to life.
All of which is true. But there’s plenty more to this endlessly surprising and fascinating city, where there are more bikes than people, no fewer than 75 museums (covering everything from handbags, and cats to gin and sex), and more than 180 different nationalities.
Getting to Amsterdam is also incredibly easy, making it one of our favourite city-break destinations – flights take just an hour and there are routes available from lots of different airports across the UK.
Below you’ll find everything we think you need to know in order to plan your perfect Amsterdam escape.
National carrier KLM flies from across the UK direct to Amsterdam Schiphol in around an hour. British Airways also offers direct flights from London, as does low-cost carrier easyJet.
