The Deal

The historic Delta King in Old Sacramento is a "1920s riverboat-turned-floating-hotel," recommended by The New York Times in its feature "36 Hours in Sacramento." Visit this highly regarded local favorite for a $19 hourlong wine class followed by lunch and a glass of wine, regularly $43.

Board the boat on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and explore the ins and outs of wine. The class includes four tastings that change daily and will cover tasting and evaluating wine, identifying different characteristics, when to send a bottle back and the best ways to pair vino with your meal.

After the wine class, choose from the following entrees and their respective wine pairings:

• Dungeness crab cakes with a mix of endive, radicchio, water cress and lemon vinaigrette, with Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling
• Delta King Chop Salad with grilled chicken, bacon and Point Reyes blue cheese, with Ferrari-Carano Fume Blend
• White bean soup with smoked ham hock and flatbread with serrano ham, manchego cheese and truffle oil, with Salmon Creek Pinot Noir
• Cajun linguini, with Bogle Old Vine Zinfandel
• Prime rib cheesesteak sandwich, with Picos del Montgo Tempranillo

The Delta King was built to carry passengers between San Francisco and Sacramento and now serves as a "charming" permanent fixture on the American River with "unparalleled river views," says Frommer's.
