For $34 per couple, glide across the lake on the private 50-minute Casanova ride, praised as a must-do in Oakland by The New York Times, regularly $65.

Owners Angelino and April met years ago during April's first gondola ride in Venice, and now seek to provide that same spark-worthy experience in Oakland. Take off from a historic boathouse on Lakeside Drive -- now home to The Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill -- and enjoy 360-degree views of the lake as your professional gondolier rows the traditional wooden craft, likely singing a classic Italian tune.

Weekend Sherpa recommends Gondola Servizio as a romantic way to "capture the intrigue" of this classic Italian activity. Guests can even request an evening cruise to admire Lake Merritt's "necklace of lights," comprised of 126 lamp posts and 3,400 bulbs (tours subject to availability).

Guests can also opt to add on a variety of homemade desserts such as chocolate eclairs, warm flourless chocolate cake, chocolate truffles, and hand-wrapped caramel squares, plus a bottle of prosecco to enjoy during the ride for $65 total, regularly $105.
