Established in the mid-1800s, the hotel reopened in 2009 after a $30 million renovation. According to local lore, the Beaux Arts-style hotel near the Mississippi River was the hideaway for the notorious Al Capone when escaping the Chicago "fuzz." Today, the hotel has an indoor pool and whirlpool, fitness center, spa and free parking. The on-site Caroline's Restaurant features cuisine described as American with a twist, from artichoke fritters to lobster mac n' cheese bake, and is open breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Guests will stay in an upgraded Premier King Suite with an open living room, private bedroom and full kitchen with granite countertops and full-size appliances. Alternatively, stay in a Luxury Queen Suite with a private bedroom with two queen beds and a separate living room with sleeper sofa. Each suite sleeps up to five people.

Just outside the hotel's doors lie the city's many restaurants, bars and shops. Try your luck at the Diamond Jo Casino & Entertainment Center or take in a concert at the Five Flags Center. It's a 20-minute drive to the boutique shops, antique stores, cafes and breweries of quaint Galena, Ill.
