One of the largest hotels in Alabama, the Sheraton Birmingham has pushed $21 million in renovations through its lobby and rooms, and now has a weekend deal that saves 30% compared with prices on surrounding dates.

Stay Fridays-Saturdays through December for $115-$125 per night in redecorated rooms that have pillow-top mattresses and flat-screen TVs.

The rooms wrap around a soaring central atrium, where a cafe serves throughout the day. There's also an indoor heated pool and a fitness center. A covered walkway connects the hotel to the Birmingham/Jefferson Convention Center.

The hotel is two miles from the city's Five Points South section, a historic neighborhood with restaurants showcasing hearty southern cooking. It's also less than a mile from the Civil Rights Institute and the 16th Street Baptist Church.
