This deal cuts the room-only price to $89 per night for Sept. 1 - Nov. 22, and it comes with a free upgrade (based on availability) to a Garden View Caribe that's even closer to the beach and pool. For $20 more a night, score a room Nov. 23 - Dec. 25.

Or, book a room plus meals for two (breakfast and choice of lunch or dinner). This is $137 per night for Sept. 1 - Nov. 22 and slightly higher for Nov. 23 - Dec. 17.

The well-reviewed Mahekal Beach Resort features two restaurants, two pools, and a pristine beach with palapa umbrellas. Rooms don't have televisions or phones, in line with the back-to-nature spirit of the resort.

About the area: Playa del Carmen displays more of a local, genuinely beach-town flavor than Cancun, which is 40 minutes away. Fifth Avenue promenade, a street strewn with restaurants and shops, is one block from the resort.
