Where to Stay in San Antonio

If you’re taking a trip to Texas, San Antonio is the perfect destination. With it’s beautiful downtown River Walk that hugs the San Antonio River, the city feels as if it was built to entertain outsiders. Discount rooms are plentiful in the downtown district and provide easy access to top attractions, such as the historic Alamo. Luxurious four-star hotels rest directly on the river, putting guests in the middle of the city’s vibrant nightlife scene.

If you’re traveling with family, you may want to compare hotel prices in San Antonio’s north and northwest sides. That’s where many of the city’s top family attractions are located, including SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

San Antonio Hotel Tips

Summers in San Antonio are hotter than a jalapeño. If you’re not acclimated to triple digit weather, you might want to schedule a trip outside of June through September. However, tourist season can be especially low around this time, which means you can frequently find cheap flights to San Antonio and hotel deals.

Because of its Mexican heritage, San Antonio plays host to a number of culturally oriented festivals throughout the year. One of the largest festivals is Fiesta San Antonio, which usually occurs in mid to late April. The celebration lasts more than a week and includes more than 100 events, including parades, tastings and art fairs. Search for reservations in advance because hotels can fill up fast.

San Antonio Hotel Recommendations

For those looking to experience San Antonio nightlife, there’s no better place to stay than along the San Antonio River. The Drury Plaza Hotel, located right along the River Walk, occupies a former bank. The building has been modernized over the years but still retains its beautiful historic character. Fill up on a free hot breakfast in the mornings and snack on complimentary popcorn and sodas every evening at 5:30 p.m. There’s also an amazing rooftop pool that gives visitors a great birds-eye view of downtown.

If you’re looking for an exclusive boutique, check into a room at the Hotel Havana. Also located along the River Walk, this uniquely styled hotel has a Cuban flare all its own. Snack on complimentary Mexican sweet breads every morning before browsing the local shops and galleries. At night, visit the hotel bar and sip on tasty libations, such as mescal and top-shelf rums.

Bring the family and relax at one of the best resorts in the city: the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa.  The resort’s numerous features include a 27-hole championship golf facility, tennis courts and a four-acre water playground. Find some time away from the kids to unwind at the Windstar spa and take in the beautiful scenery of the Texas Hill Country.

San Antonio Transportation

There are many ways to get around San Antonio, but quite possibly the best way to see some of the most interesting parts of the city are on your own two feet. Nothing compares to a stroll along San Antonio’s beautiful River Walk. Take in the smells of the area’s eclectic cuisine, the sounds of live mariachi music and the sights of warm lighting and a nighttime starry sky.

San Antonio is also extraordinarily bike friendly. In fact, the city boasts about 130 miles of bike lanes and routes. Nothing beats pedaling through San Antonio’s public parks on a warm spring day.

The public transportation offerings in San Antonio include a fairly large bus system as well as a small, three-line streetcar system. The streetcar system is especially designed for sightseeing, making it an excellent choice for tourists that want to get off their feet. You can also hop on one of the city’s turquoise bus lines, which make regular stops at some of San Antonio’s best-known landmarks and tourist attractions.
