For light sleepers who want to get away from the late-night noise and neon lights of Downtown, roughly a dozen more hotels are located south of the city along South Virginia Street and Interstate 580. Sparks, the city due east of Reno, also has several chain and independent hotels.

Consider looking at the resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe if you’re planning on taking a day trip from Reno. The north end of the lake is only 45 minutes away by car, and South Lake Tahoe can be reached in less than an hour and a half.

While not as over-the-top as the hotels you’ll find on the Las Vegas Strip, the casino hotels in Reno are impressive, exciting and generally among the most posh lodging options in town. If you’re looking for an elegant spin on Reno’s casino scene, the Siena Hotel, Spa & Casino is an upscale option outfitted in Tuscan décor with a rooftop swimming pool and one of the city’s best spas.

A short distance away from Downtown Reno, the Grand Sierra Resort has one of the city’s longest lists of amenities. 10 restaurants, 50 lanes of bowling, a four-screen movie theater, thrill rides, go-karts and numerous features for golfers are just the beginning. Slightly farther south, the Peppermill Hotel Casino is one of the most elegantly designed properties in the area. It’s a terrific destination outside of Downtown for both gambling and dining, but it may be the best place in Reno to splurge on a luxury suite.

You can easily forego a rental car if your hotel is in Downtown Reno and you’re planning on staying in town the entire time. Downtown is easy to cover on foot and cabs are plentiful. While there is a bus system that serves the area, it’s not particularly practical for tourists. If you can’t walk where you need to go, take a cab.

If you plan on exploring the surrounding area, renting a vehicle is your best bet. Most national car rental agencies are represented at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, so you can hit the road right after your flight to Reno touches down.
