Where to Stay in Pittsburgh

The vast majority of Pittsburgh's hotels are clustered in the Golden Triangle. The Golden Triangle is the official name of the city's beautiful downtown district, which rests along the intersection of three different rivers. Here, you'll find the Cultural District, a 14-block area that boasts some of the city's best performance halls, theaters and restaurants. The area is also home to the Central Downtown Historic District. Featuring a number of example of turn-of-the-century architecture, this central business district is one of the most convenient destinations for business travelers. Family vacationers should search for hotel discounts on the city's North Side. Here, you'll find the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh as well as the city's most popular museum, the Carnegie Science Center. Shoppers will want to find boutique accommodations near one of the East End's affluent neighborhoods like Shadyside or Squirrel Hill, both of which feature a mix of national and local retailers.

If you want to partake in some of Pittsburgh's largest festivals, visit during the summertime. In early June, the city hosts the popular Three Rivers Arts Festival. The festival, which lasts more than a week, features artist markets, local culinary treats and live music. The city also hosts a large folk festival every May that features dozens of acts over three days. If you are planning a visit during these celebrations, you'll want to search for affordable rooms well in advance.

If you want to find cheap flights to Pittsburgh and hotel deals, book your trip either during July and August, when the weather is at its hottest, or in the wintertime, when snowfall can reach as much as a foot. Although the weather might not be as ideal, you'll still find plenty to do in this cultural haven. For instance, those who visit near Christmas can find guided tours of some of the area's most elegant historic houses.

Room sizes range from studios to two bedrooms, and all come equipped with private baths and full kitchens. The hotel also boats some pretty unique amenities, including free off-street parking, complimentary shuttle service within three miles of the hotel and complimentary bike rentals.

Pittsburgh Transportation

Pittsburgh has a robust public transportation system providing visitors with a number of options. The city features a 25-mile light-rail system known as the T, which runs below ground throughout the city and above ground in the suburbs. Currently, the T consists of four lines. Pittsburgh also has two funiculars that take passengers up Mt. Washington on the city's south side. There are also approximately 180 bus routes throughout the Allegheny County area, where Pittsburgh is located.

Pittsburgh also boasts great biking trails along its rivers. However, the hilly streets can make urban biking difficult for the uninitiated. Driving is also an option. The city uses a color-coded Belt System to help drivers navigate its winding streets without getting lost.
